Homeschool Math

Modern Curriculum Press Mathematics (MCP)

MCP is an economical basic math program with textbooks for grades K through 6. MCP Math includes consumable workbooks that are in red, black, and white with simple drawings as illustration. It also comes with a teacher’s guide that is simple to follow, featuring a section that helps students correct common errors. Each lesson covers the math concept and the methods for finding the solutions methods in a traditional way. Many word problems are included. There are separate sections for problem solving.

Modern Curriculum Press Mathematics uses a traditional drill and practice format. MCP Math can be used as a supplemental text, though as a primary text it is more popular with homeschooling families than government schools. Each book is smaller than a typical traditional hardback textbook, or compared to some newer text series which may include many textbooks, or no textbook at all to bring home.

The low cost of this curriculum and its simplicity makes it an attractive choice to many homeschool parents. The texts were not designed to conform to the controversial NCTM standards of mathematics reform, which is also appealing to many homeschool families.

From the publisher of  MCP Math:

“A complete, economical math series teaching problem-solving strategies, critical-thinking skills, estimation, mental-math skills, and all basic math concepts and skills. Its design encourages thinking skills, active participation, and mastery of skills within the context of problem-solving situations, abundant practice to master those skills, developed models students actively work with to solve problems, and reinforcement of problem-solving and strategies. Each lesson begins with a developed model that teaches algorithms and concepts in a problem-solving situation, and students are required to interact with that model.”

MCP Math Curriculum is  a less expensive alternative to the popular Saxon math textbooks. In contrast to Saxon’s method of combining many skills, Modern Curriculum Press usually presents one skill at a time. There have been a few complaints that some of the units have too many practice problems, but this is easily overcome by just to requiring that every problem is solved. Extra practice may be needed from time to time, and when such is the case, extra problems are appreciated.
