and Readers

  • Alphaphonics– A classic reading program that has been around for many years.
  • Bob Books– a favorite of my boys’ when they were learning to read. Stories are written with the simplest of words promoting success for the beginner. The illustrations, too, are very simple, but appealing you children. The books are very small and a stack of them  can be easily carried around be a child that is eager to read them again.

  • Explode the Code -Many homeschooler love these helpful workbooks that can be used to reinforce phonics and learning to read. Children seem to enjoy them. They are more fun, than hard work for beginners.
  • Happy Phonics -This phonics program was developed by a veteran homeschool mom. I’ve found that some to the best homeschool curriculum comes from moms that have developed them to suit the needs of their own families. They often have perks that are not found in namebrand curriculum developers.
  • Hooked on Phonics -A proven learn to read program that has stood the test of time. Click here for new Hooked on Phonics. They often have ongoing sales.[phpbay]Hooked on Phonics learn to read, 4, “”, “”[/phpbay]
  • Phonics Pathways – Mennonite readers highly acclaimed by many homeschoolers.
  • Saxon Phonics– a phonics program that is software for great drill. I haven’t seen this program up close, so I don’t know how good it is.
  • Sing Spell Read and Write – this reading program has been around for many years. It replaced the old Play and Talk phonics program for being highly recommended by Mary Pride’s homeschool curriculum books years ago. It’s still a great program, but so many new and good reading programs have been developed now, that you have to consider what your child likes and what you like and compare the features and benefits of each popular program to decide which one if for your family.
  • Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons– I tried this book before my boys were ready to read and we didn’t have success. I don’t think it was the fault of the book, but rather lack of reading readiness.
  • Ruth Beechick: The Three R’s– My all time favorite book on common sense teaching of Kindergarten, First, and Second Grades at home. You can get by without an expensive curriculum if you carefully follow the practical advice of Ruth Beechick.

I recently posted about Hooked on Phonics Reading with links to website as well as link to hookedonphonics listings on eBay for comparison.  Always consider guarantees when you purchase a curriculum. If a money back guarantee is offered, it may be wise to buy from the company rather than buying a used program.
