Maps are essential when you teach Geography in your homeschool.

The Markable Map is a good choice because you can write on it over and over again with water based markers. This map is 23 inches by 34 inches – a modified Robinson projection map. The Markable Map can be hung on the wall or you can fold it up for easy storage (folds to smaller than 12″ X 12″.  The map’s laminated surface allows marking  water-based markers or with grease pencils. Personally, I would buy just the map and not the set that includes the markers. The water-based marker set seems overpriced ($6.08) to me. You can probably find a set of markers for less than $2 locally.

What are Others Saying about the Markable Map?

Some families love this map:
No it does not include every lake and river, but is has been a great tool since my kids enjoy labeling each place as we study it and they make notes through the year. It is simple to use and younger students like using it. It is convenient, helpful, durable, and fun. Also: Having a markable map for the world and for the United States is essential, but many would also like to have a markable map of Canada.

Some are disappointed with this map:
Some people have been dissatisfied with this map because the “world map is too small for labeling.” “Even when the kids write in their tinest letters, you can’t tell what country, river etc. they are referring to, because their writing spills into the next country, river etc.” She hopes Sonlight will offer a better map for their excellent curriculum.

Another user says ” it has a major mistake about coloring China and Taiwan in the same color. Taiwan is not part of China.”

Consider Making Your Own Markable Map

One cost-cutting idea for a different type of marking map is to lay a paper map on a table and cover it with a see-through vinyl table cloth. You can mark on the table cloth just like you can mark on the markable map.

If you use Sonlight curriculum, this is a required resource in each Sonlight core program for K through 300. The map comes with a four color set of markers. Remember, you can save $2.67 on the set if you are a Core Sonlighter.(I think you can get just the map and use markers that you already have or buy some that are less expensive.)

Other Sources for Markable Maps:

Sometimes eBay has Markable Maps available. Sometimes the listings may not be the same map offered by Sonlight, so be sure to consider if it would work for your homeschooling geography needs and also, is it worth the price.
