A Child’s History of the World by V.M. Hillyer:

This book is a classic history ‘textbook’ offering  interesting telling of world history for children. It introduces children to many important moments in history and upon this foundation, a child’s knowledge base can grow.

Sonlight-History of the World by Hillyer

For a long while A Child’s History of the World by Virgil M. Hillyer was out of print. Even today, if you look on Amazon, you will see used books listed for prices often over $100. So fortunately, Calvert School took the initiative and republished/reprinted it which pleases many homeschool families who use it as an integral part of their history homeschool curriculum in the elementary grades. I am pleased that it is printed as a hardback book since so many publishers choose paperback books to lower prices. When a book is as good as this one, it needs to be a hardback, since it will be used a lot and held on to for years…even passed down to grandchildren in many cases. It is available today on the Sonlight Sitefor $28.

This book is used by Calvert School and Sonlight as part of the homeschool curriculum.
For Sonlight it is a required resource for Core Levels 1-2, Condensed 1+2, and Alt 7. This is the 1997 hardback edition (last updated in 1994) of the famous classic by the headmaster of the Calvert School of Baltimore. Hillyer presents a delightful narrative history of the world from “the beginning” to the mid-1990s. This book probably qualifies as a ‘cuddle on the sofa’ book. It reads more like an interesting story than like a textbook. One welcome change in this new edition is that racial slurs have been removed.

I have seen A Child’s History of the World by Hillyer sell on EBAY for $22 + shipping. Really, you might want to just buy a new book from Sonlight.
