Even when I was in school (public school, that is…) years ago, part of our eighth grade science class involved a rocket project where the whole class got to shoot up individual rockets from the schoolyard. It was such a welcome change from the boring class lectures that I have always remembered fondly my experience with the Estes model rocket in my 8th grade Physical Science.
Years later, we bought rocket kits for our children when we were doing a unit study. We headed out to the Furman University practice field shoot the rockets and my boys were amazed just as I had been.
Well, the Estes rockets are still around and better than ever. They are available from small and simple to much bigger and more exciting. They are a great addition to homeschool science courses, but they are also perfect Christmas or birthday gifts for many children. My children loved action toys like this that instill wonder are are fun for the whole family.

Most of the Estes rockets come assembled. The Patriot rocket is based on the long-range ballistic missile used in the National Missile Defense system.
The rockets have special clear fins allow the rocket to look like a real missile as it blasts off 600 feet into the air! The plastic nose cone is made to be durable.

Most of the Estes rockets are launch-able over and over again using the standard Estes engines which can be purchased everywhere that Estes products are sold.
The rockets we have used came with a pre-assembled, 12” plastic parachute for easy recovery. In my experience, the rocket holds up pretty well to multiple launches.

Abeka Science of the Physical Creation for 9th grade or Abeka Matter and Motion for 8th grade are two popular homeschool science textbooks that would lend themselves to including a rocket launch in the curriculum plan to enrich the learning of science with hands-on discovery.
