Beechick Strong Start Series: The Three R's

A truly gentle approach to teaching the basics (reading, writing, and math) to K through second grade can be found in a small book: Ruth Beechick: The Three R’s

Dr. Ruth Beechick is a  talented teacher who believes that home is the best place for children to learn. She thinks that parents don’t give themselves enough credit for being the best teachers for their children!  Every year New material for homeschoolers is introduced that  builds on Ruth  Beechick’s wisdom. No matter what methods you decide to use in your homeschool, you’ll be blessed by Ruth’s advice and encouragement.

This book previously was published and sold as three books in the Strong Start Series. There was a separate book for Reading, one for Writing, and one for Arithmetic. Now all three are combined into one very slim volume that is a quick read and full of nuggets of wonderful homeschooling advice and ideas for teaching your youngest children the basics: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic.

So what is in this book, The Three R’s? The book is divided into three parts that are tabbed for easy reference.

  • The READING section tells how and when to begin phonics, and how to develop comprehension skills.
  • The LANGUAGE section shows how to develop written language skills naturally, in the same way children learn oral language.
  • The ARITHMETIC section explains how to teach understanding of math concepts, and not just memorization of facts.

Learn how to take the mystery out of teaching the early grades with this practical, down-to-earth guidebook by Ruth Beechick.

My Own Experience with This Book

As a homeschooling mother that relied on the advice and ideas from these early Beechick books, I can strongly recommend these books (now reprinted as one book-The Three R’s) for the easy method of teaching explained by Ruth. These books will help any new homeschool mom become confident in teaching her children. They helped me see that teaching all the basics naturally fits into our day when we use the many teachable moments of everyday life. The additional teaching only takes a fraction of the time that classroom based curriculum requires. Plus your child’s learning opportunities can be minutely fitted to your individual child’s needs and learning style. These are wonderful books that give such wisdom. …and we all need wisdom when we homeschool! (Julie Simmons of Best Homeschool Buys)
