Is College Necessary for Homeschoolers?
My daughter and I watched this short video today. She can identify with many of the points made by the students in the film. We had just been discussing the lack of value in college today. Her dad keeps reminding us that a college degree is a ticket to many opportunities that you will be denied if you don't have it. My daughter received her A.A. degree when she was 17. Between applying too late one semester and a family move recently, more than a year has past since she was enrolled in college. She really doesn't want to go back. She wants to be writer and is presently working hard on her first novel. In her case she doesn't see the need for college. She says that she learns better on her own.
Her 2 older brothers have each received engineering degrees from a major university. For them, their college degree in engineering IS a ticket to a higher paying job from the beginning, but what about an English major like my daugher that reads and writes already like other people breath. Does she really need a college degree. I have a college degree and besides teaching school for a while, I have homeschooled 5 children for more than twenty years. But my daughter has a better vocabulary than I because of all of her reading. She is certainly a better writer than I am. She even did well in math and science in high school and at community college.
She would like to have her novel published before the end of 2010 and then continue to write, to travel, to read, , and one day homeschool her children.
So at this point, we all agree, that she needs to prove that she can make money with her writing. We are giving her some time to try.
