Exploring Creation with Botany by Jeannie Fulbright

This is an in-depth study of the plant kingdom  for students from about first through sixth grade. The text is written in an captivating Charlotte Mason style like the Apologia  Astronomy book for elementary children. There are explanations and descriptions that are written for a child to comprehend easily and at that appropriate reading level. No need to  stop and define words. since everything is explained simply and thoroughly, perfect for the ages it was written for.  Since the book is written for a wide range of ages (6-12), it is easy to use with all of your children together or at least those that are younger than seventh grade.

This book begins with a lesson on the nature of botany and the process of classifying plants. It then discusses the development of plants from seeds, the reproduction processes in plants, the way plants make their food, and how plants get their water and nutrients and distribute them throughout the body of the plant. As students study these topics, they also learn about many different kinds of plants in creation and where they belong in the plant classification system.

The activities and projects use easy-to-find household items and truly make the lessons come alive!  This is the part of the study that my four boys would have loved if this book had been around when they were in elementary grades. The projects include these and more:

  • making a “light hut” in which to grow plants
  • dissection of a bean seed
  • growing seeds in plastic bags to watch the germination process
  • observing how plants grow towards light
  • measuring transpiration, forcing bulbs to grow out of season
  • making a leaf skeleton
  • forcing pine cones to open and close

The publisher and author recommend that you spend the whole school year to complete this book, using two sessions each week to the work through the course. Some of the activities and projects in the book are long-term and results of these can take several days to observe. For projects like these, you will need to have a flexible schedule.

The author of the Young Explorer Series of Apologia is Jeannie Fulbright. On her website, she writes this about homeschooling her children:

"I so very much love homeschooling, though non-homeschoolers can’t comprehend that sentiment – especially if I were to relate what it is really like. I used to pray for it to be easier. But I’ve learned that the only way it will be easier is if I change my attitude about it. My present desire is that my heart will change, that I would no longer wish for homeschooling to be quiet and peaceful and smooth sailing, but that I would have a willing heart to embrace and enjoy it the way it is today. For this is the way that the Lord has ordained it, and these little rambunctious boys and girls are my gifts to treasure, train and love. If the day is chaotic, I desire that my heart would be submitted to that with joy. If school takes all day, I want to remember that God is in control and He sets my schedule, not I. I want to homeschool as unto the Lord, not unto myself. For if I get irritated and upset because things didn’t go as planned, or as easily as I wished, then I’m saying my plan for my day was better than God’s. And because God’s plan happened, which was out of my control, then I want to be thankful and joyful anyway.

So, these are my high hopes for myself. And I pray that this year, the Lord will accomplish in me all that I hope He will." You can read more from Jeannie at JeannieFulbright.com

Homeschool Science curriculum

Since our family used Apologia for seventh grade through high school, you might like to see my Apologia Science Review that tells how it worked for us. Remember, every family is different. Just because a curriculum is a fit for us doesn't necessarily mean that it is right for your family. :)

Which Apologia Science should I take at the secondary level?

Knowing which science courses to offer your student at the secondary level and when to offer them can seem difficult. In reality, course sequencing for junior high and high school isn't that hard when you know one important fact: A student's mathematics level is the key factor for his or her success or failure in the high school sciences. If you make sure that your child is well prepared mathematically for the science course he or she will take, you will have gone a long way toward assuring your student's academic success. See secondary science chart.

What are the differences between Apologia editions?

Improvements made in the newer Apologia science editions are:
* Dr. Jay  Wile has been answering student questions on each of these courses for seven years or more. Those questions have allowed him to realize what sections of the books could be written more clearly. Thus, the newer  editions  are even more understandable than the first editions.
* The student text has graphic icons that tell the student if there is a related multimedia presentation on the optional CD.
* There are course websites that have links to materials which provide extra help as well as interesting news related to each field.
* There are cumulative tests in the solutions and tests manual if the teacher wants to give the student quarterly, semester, or final tests.
* The tests in the solutions and tests manual contain a point system that helps the teacher grade the tests.
* Though the module tests are found in the solutions and tests manual (so that the teacher has a copy of them), a second set of tests is also included in a perforated booklet. This allows the student to take tests without referring to the solutions and tests manual.
Because of the differences between the 1st and 2nd editions, students in a group setting  must all have the same edition.

Sonlight continues to update and improve their award winning curriculum
In 2009 the Sonlight Company made extensive updates their science curriculum! They updated the  science books and more. Their are more hands-on activities, new Instructor's Guide Notes,  Activity Sheets that are updated, and an update look to their user friendly schedules.

I'm glad to see that Sonlight also offers improvement in linking readings to relevant science experiments. I think that a firm connection between these two methods of learning is crucial for maximum retention in the minds of my children.

Sonlight's  new articles which are  included in every Introduction to K- 6 science answers pertinent questions about their approach to the age of the earth and evolution. Parents need to know exactly where a science curriculum is coming from. Sonlight  teaches Creation by God, but mentions a variety of perspectives from this belief.

Examples of some Sonlight Science updates;

  • 5-Day program of Science K adds new, colorful books such as the Eggs and Chicks, Tadpoles and Frogs, Caterpillars and Butterflies, , and Under the Sea.

Sonlight Science

  • Science 1 offers several new books on space, the human body, and the excellent resource See How It's Made
  • Weather, a new DK book, has been added to Science 2...also, the beautifully illustrated Planet Earth.
  • Watch the new DVD, Incredible Creatures that Defy Evolution I when you study from Science 3.

Sonlight Science Curriculum

  • Bell and the Science of the Telephone, The Story of Inventions is a delightful book added to  Science 4.
  • Watch the fascinating DVD Unlocking the Mystery of Life which is new to  Science 5 which will explore many questions in biology about Intelligent Design.
  • Science 6 adds  Icons of Evolution (DVD),

Sonlight Science 6

  • Also NEW for Science 6:  The Usborne Internet-Linked Encyclopedia of Planet Earth, and the optional Cool Stuff 2.0 and How it Works.

All of these improvements are based on Sonlight's never ending research into the best children's books that combine with the Sonlight method of learning.

Help for Busy Parents:
I like the way that Sonlight makes it easy on busy homeschool parents by offering science activity packs which include all the needed materials to make science experiments and activities an easy part of your science curriculum. The following video shows what these science packets look like:

How do you know which high school science course  your student is ready for?

The most important factor in determining which science is a student's mathematics level.  Math skill  can mean  the difference in success or failure in the secondary  sciences. Make  sure  your child is  prepared mathematically for the science course he will take. This will go a long way in assuring your child's  success in science.
